Largest Natural Lake Completely Contained Within Indiana

The largest natural lake is formerly known as Turkey Lake, and Lake Wawasee rests entirely within the state of Indiana. The lake is about 3,000 acres in size, and there is more than enough room for you on this lake. Lake Wawasee is located just east of Indiana State Road 13 in Kosciusko County, Indiana.

Lake Wawasee is nestled between the cities of South Bend and Fort Wayne, Indiana. This lake has long been a popular attraction for visitors from Chicago to all over Indianapolis.

On the Lake

Lake Wawasee's large size makes it a great spot to enjoy water sports and powerboating. You can kayak, canoe, boat, sail, fish, swim, camp, tube, ski, and ice fish on this famously blue-green water.

During a recent fish survey, researchers found 28 different species of fish living in Lake Wawasee. The top populations of fish in order were bluegill, largemouth bass, yellow bullhead catfish, northern pike, yellow perch, redear sunfish, and black crappie.

For more seasoned anglers, there are multiple fishing tournaments on Lake Wawasee and the surrounding lakes throughout the year.

A source for local fun on the water is "The Sandbar." It is a shallow feature of the lake where boats can anchor, and families can enjoy swimming in the three-to-four foot water depths.

Travel to Fort Wayne
